چکیده
Estrous synchronization and artificial insemination have potential to increase the rate of genetic improvement, calf uniformity and improve calf weaning weight in beef cattle operations. Synchronization programs utilizing exogenous progestins, gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), and prostaglandin (PGF 2 α) have been shown to be effective for estrous synchronization in beef cows and heifers (Lamb, 2010). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different progestins [melengestrol acetate (MGA) compared with controlled internal drug-release inserts (CIDR)] when used during a 14-d progestin protocol followed by GnRH 2 d after progestin withdrawal and PGF 2 α injection 7 days later.

Introduction Estrous synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) are reproductive management tools that have been available to beef producers for over 40 years. Synchronization of the estrous cycle has the potential to shorten the calving season, increase calf uniformity, and enhance the possibilities for utilizing AI. Artificial insemination allows producers the opportunity to infuse supe...

Reproductive efficiency is the most important factor impacting the economics of a cow calf operation. The economic value of reproduction for commercial beef producers was reported to be five times greater than calf growth (Trenkle and Willham, 1977). Maximizing reproductive efficiency depends upon the successful completion of the following events: a heifer must reach puberty before the start of...

A study was conducted to determine if early weaning spring born calves can be an alternative management strategy during drought and if early weaning facilitates rebreeding of young cows. Our objectives were to determine effects of early weaning at the start of breeding on cow body weight, body condition score, and reproductive performance with or without estrous synchronization and AI in two he...
